Extended Area Forecast for Friday through Sunday: Fair through the period, except for a chance of showers late Saturday. Highs will be in the mid 80s, lows in the mid 60s. Normal Washington temperatures for the period are a high of 88 and a low of 69.

The National Weather Forecast for today - Thundershowers will scatter from the lower Mississippi Valley eastward along the Gulf Coast into Georgia and Florida. There will also be some showers from eastern South Dakota into Iowa. Isolated thundershowers are also possible in Arizona and New Mexico. Elsewhere clear or partly cloudy skies will prevail. Temperatures will be mild from the upper Mississippi Valley to the northern and middle Atlantic states and a little cooler in the Carolinas. Warmer readings are forecast from the central plains across the northern Rockies into the Pacific Northwest. Hot weather will continue from the southern Plains, along the Mexican border into the plateau and California interior. Other areas will be seasonably warm.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. period was 33 fro the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 25 and 49 indicate fair air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air becomes hazardous and persons with lung, heart and eye problems should restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates the air quality will improve.
