The National Weather Forecast for Today - Scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely over the central Plains and central Rocky Mountain region into Montana, over the middle Mississippi Valley and upper and lower Great Lakes, the Ohio Valley and from the South Atlantic Coast westward into east Texas isolated showers are possible over portions of the lower Mississippi Valley, the western Gulf Coast, the Southern Rocky Mountains and over the central and northern Appalachians. The council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 p.m. to 3 p.m! Period was 120 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. When the index exceeds 100 the air becomes heart and eye problems should restrict thei activity. An air pollution alert has been declared.
