Winds should be westerly at about 5 knots this morning becoming southwesterly at up to 12 knots this afternoon and then becoming variable at 7 knots or less tonight.

Extended Area Outlook: For Sunday through Tuesday - Humid with chance of rain with highs in 90s and lows in 70s through period. It should be cooler in mountains. Washington's normal temperature range for this time of year is from 87 to 68.

West Virginia: Today - Humid with chance of rain, highs in 60s to near 90, lows in 60s to low 70s. Saturday - Humid with chance of rain, highs in 80s to near 90.

Atlantic Ocean Beaches from Cape May to Cape Hatteras: Today and Saturday - Partly cloudy and humid with chance afternoon or evening showers, highs in mid 80s to low 90s. Water temperatures should range from low 70s in north to near 80 in south.

The National Weather Forecast for Today - Showers will be scattered over northern New England. Showers and thundershowers will extend from southern Pennsylvania through Florida, across the Ohio Valley to the Gulf of Maxico Coast through the sough half of the Mississippe Valley and southern Plains into the central portion of Arizona. Showers will also be scattered over the upper Mississippi Valley and the northern Missouri Valley. Temperatures will be cool over Montana and mild from the Rockies and Plains into the middle Mississippi Valley. It will be very hot in the Pacific northwest. Elsewhere, temperatures will remain seasonably warm to hot.

The Council of Government's Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the the high reading in the Washington Area during the 2 to 3 p.m. period was 75 for the pollutant photochemical oxidents. Index values between 50 and 99 indicate unhealthy air quality. When the index exceeds 100, the air is considered hazardous, and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will improve.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls will be near 2.7 feet today.
