Atlantic Ocean Beaches from Cape May to Cape Hatheras: Today and Monday - Humid with chance of afternoon or evening showers, highs i mid 80s to near 90. Water temperatures should range from low 70s in north to near 80 in south.

The National Weather Forecast for Today - Showers and thundershowers will extend from the Atlantic Coast across the Gulf of Mexico Coast through the Appalachians over the Ohio Valley and the lower half of the Mississippi Valley as well as across the Missouri Valley into the northern Rockies and northern Arizona. Temperatures will be mild from the Great Lakes and the Ohio Valley through the upper half of the Mississippi valley the north half of the Plains and the Missouri Valley. There will be some relief from the very hot temperatures in the Pacific northwest but it will remain above normal for mid August. Temperatures will be seasonably warm to hot over the remainder of the nation.

The Council of Government's Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington Area during the noon to 1 p.m. period was 22 for the pollutant photochemical oxidants. Index waves between 0 and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100, the air is considered hazardous, and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls will be near 2.5 feet today.
