Extended Area Forecast for Saturday through Monday: Variety cloudy throught the period, chance of thundershowers on each day. Highs will be in the 80s, lows in the 60s. Normal Washington temperatures for the period are a high of 85 and a low of 66.

National Weather Forecast for today - Showers will reach from the northern Pacific coast into the northern Rockies. Thundershowers will scatter from the southern half of the Atlantic coast, westward along the Gulf coast, into east Texas. There will be some rain in the upper Mississippi valley and northern Maine. Other parts of the country will be have clear or partly cloudy skies. Temperatures will be cooler from Montana into the northern portions of California, Nevada and Utah. Warmer readings are forecast from the east Dakotas into Iowa and north Illinois. Hot temperatures will be confined to the desert in the southwest, as well as along the Mexican border into southern Texas. It will be cool in the northern Great Lakes, while it will be mild in the northeast and warm elsewhere.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. period was 25 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 25 and 49 indicate fair air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will improve.
