The National Weather Forecast for Today - Showers will be scattered throughout the Pacific northwest. Showers and occassional thundershowers will be widely scattered from the southern Rockies into the southwest.Showers and thunderstorms will continue from Florida across the Gulf of Mexico Coast through south Texas. Showers and occasional thundershowers will extend from the central Plains and east portions of the northern Plains across the upper half of the Mississippi Valley, the Ohio Valley and the central Appalachians through the Virginias as well as over northern Maine. Temperatures will be mild through northern New England and from the upper Great Lakes through the northern half of the Plains to the Pacific Coast into the Great Basin. It will also be mild over the Inland southwest. Temperatures over the remainder of the nation will be seasonably warm.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index from yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 to 3 p.m. period was 115 for the pollutant, photo-chemical exidants. Index values between 130 and 249 indicate very unhealthy air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will remain about the same.

The National Weather Service forcasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should remain near 2.7 feet today.
