Extended Area Forecast for Saturday through Monday: Chance of showers throughout the period. Highs will be in the 80s, lows in the 60s. Normal Washington temperatures for the period are a high of 82 and a low of 63.

The National Weather Forecast for today - Showers and thunderstorms will scatter from eastern Texas through the Gulf Coast and Florida, and northward ove the southern Appalachians from all of the Atlantic Coast. Thundershowers will also reach from Iowa and the upper Mississippi Valley over the upper Great Lakes. Showers will dampen Montana while the rest of the nation will have mostly sunny skies. Mild temperatures will continue from the Pacific northwest across the northern border states through western New York. It will become hot over the central Plains. Elsewhere, seasonably warm temperatures will prevail.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 p.m., to 3 p.m. period was 44 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 25 and 49 indicate fair air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today, indicates that the air quality will improve.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should be near 2.7 feet today.
