Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay: Today - Partly cloudy skies with chance of afternoon and evening showers. Visibility should range from good to poor in showers. Winds should be southwesterly at about 5 knots this morning up to 18 knots this afternoon and near 10 knots tonight.

Extended Area Outlook: For Wednesday through Friday - Fair skies Wednesday followed by chance of rain late Thursday and Friday. Highs should average near 80, lows in 60s, except slightly cooler in mountains. Washington's normal temperature range for this time of year is from 78 to 59.

West Virginia: Today - Humid with rain likely today, ending tonight. Highs in 80s, lows in mid 60s to low 60s. Tuesday - Fair, highs from 70s to low 80s.

The Nation Yesterday: A flash flood watch was posted over portions of western New York for today as locally heavy rains are likely in the northeast portion of the nation. Although some lowland flooding continued over a portion of eastern Iowa, the flash flood watch over eastern Iowa has expired. Thunderstorms have moved away from the area threatened earlier yesterday. Showers and thunderstorms continued into the evening from New England across the Great Lakes and upper Missouri Valley, over the Ohio Valley from Central Texas, across the Gulf of Mexico Coastal states to the Atlantic Coast from Florida through the Carolinas. Rainshowers were scattered over the Pacific northwest from west Washington into northwest California.

Eight tornades touched down yesterday afternoon, 15 in northwest Pennsylvania, 2 in southwest New York and [WORD ILLEGIBLE] in southerwest Texas. Skies over the southwest remained partly cloudy or clear yesterday with temperatures reaching into the 90s over the desert area and even past 100 degrees occasionally. Hottest in the nation was Gila Bend, Ariz., with an afternoon high temperature of 102 degrees.

The National Weather Forecast for: Today - Showers and occasional thunderstorms will extend from the Atlantic Coast across the Great Lakes, the Ohio Valley and the lower Mississippi Valley. Rainshowers will also extend from the northern Rockies across the Pacific Coast from central California through Washington. Temperatures will be warm from east Texas across the Gulf of Mexico Coastal states, through the southern two thirds of the Appalachians to the Atlantic Coast from Pennsylvania through Florida. It will be cool from the upper Great Lake through the northern Plains and partly half of the Rockies to the Pacific Coast from Washington through central California. Elsewhere, temperatures will be seasonably mild.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the noon to 1 p.m. period was 50 for the pollutant photochemical oxidants index values between 60 and 99, indicate unhealthy air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should remain near 2.6 feet through today.
