Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay - Showers likely. Southerly winds will increase to 10 to 18 knots by afternoon. Waves will build to 2 to 3 feet by nightfall. Visibility will be 1 to 3 miles except in shower activity.

West Virginia: Today - Showers or thundershowers, highs will be from the upper 60s to upper 70s, low in the 50s. Sunday - Showers continuing, high in the 60s.

Extended Area Outlook for Monday through Wednesday - Sunny and cool through the period, highs will average from the upper 60s to mid 70s, lows in the upper 40s and 50s. Average Washington temperatures for the period are a high of 74 and a low of 54.

The National Weather Forecast for Today - Rain or scattered showers and thundershowers will cover much of the north and central Plains, the Great Lakes and the Mississippi Valley over the eastern Gulf States and across the Appalachians to the Atlantic Coast. A few showers will also dampen western Washington. Elsewhere most skies will be sunny. Most of the northern half of the country will have coll temperatures, with warm readings over the south Atlantic and Gulf Coast states. It will be hot in south Texas and mild in the remainder of the nation.

The Council of Governments Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high ready in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 47 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 25 and 49 indicate fair air quantity. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will improve.
