State government agencies in Maryland will be the Washington area's only observers next week of the actual date on which Christopher Columbus and company made their initial appearance on land in the New World 485 years ago.

While the state of Maryland observes Wednesday, Oct. 12, as the holiday, all other state and local jurisdiction here will commemorate Columbus Day on Monday.

All federal government offices will be closed on Monday, as will all banks nationwide. Individual city, county and state governments vary. Here is a list of closings in the metropolitan area:

District: All government ofices and agencies will be closed except for essential services such as police and fire departments.

All public schools in the District will be closed. Metro subways will not be running and buses will operate on a Saturday schedule. Parking and traffic regulations will be suspended including reversible lanes, no standing and no turning regulations during rush hours.

Monday trash collection will be moved to Tuesday and normal Tuesday collection will be on Wednesday. Liquor stores are unaffected and can open at the owner's discretion.

Montgomery County: County government offices will be closed Monday, Maryland state government offices and courts will be closed Wednesday.

Parking regulations are suspended and all liquor stores will be closed Monday.

Public schools are open and libraries will be closed. Refuse collection will be unaffected.

Prince George's: County government offices and agencies will be closed but state offices will close Wednesday as will the courts.

Public schools and libraries are open and refuse collection will follow normal schedules. Liquor stores are unaffected by the holiday.

In addition, Maryland Division of Motor Vehicle offices will be open Monday but closed Wednesday.

Alexandria: All city government offices and courts will be closed as will public schools and public libraries. There will be normal refuse collection in Alexandria.

Arlington: All government offices will be closed and parking and traffic regulations will be suspended. Schools will be closed as will libraries. Refuse collection will not be affected.

Fairfax: All government offices, schools and libraries will be closed, County trash collection will be unchanged.

Prince William: All governemt offices and schools will be closed but libraries will be open. There will be no refuse collection on Monday.

Statewide, all liquor stores will be closed and so will Virginia offices of the Division of Motor Vehicles.

Meanwhile, Oct. 10 is the national day of the Republic of China. The embassy here is postponing its celebration of "Double 10". The annual reception will be held Tuesday, Oct. 11 at Ambassador James Shen's residence on Woodley Road NW from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
