The National Weather Forecast for today - A beautiful autumn day country. Temperatures will be cool in the East, but milder over the Plains and Western states. It will be warm over the Desert southwest and the interior of California. Scattered showers are expected over the lower Great Lakes area, northern New England, southern Florida and the northern Pacific Coast region into the norhtern Rockies. Sunny skies will be the rule elsewhere.

The Council of Government Air Quality Index of yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 29 for the pollutant, photo-chemical oxidants. Index values between 0 and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye aliments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will remain about the same.
