The annual leaf collection program of the District's Department of Environmental Services is underway now through December.

"We are strongly encouraging District residents to place their leaves in containers or plastic bags and to leave them at regular trash collection points, particularly on the Thursday and Friday collection day," said DES Director Herbert L. Tucker. He emphasized that residents should not sweep leaves into the gutter or street. Leaves placed in containers will be promptly removed each week, and those in the street or gutter can only be collected twice in 10 weeks, Tucker said.

To have leaves collected, place them out for pickup on the second trash collection day of the week, which is generally a light trash pickup day. That enables crews and trucks to handle the additional loan and complete their collection routes.

In addition to weekly collection of leaves from private property with the regular trash pickup, the department's Bureau of Solid Waste Collection will use 23 leaf vacuums to clear leaves from streets in most areas of the city. In those areas, the schedule calls for removal of leaves from streets twice during the season or once every five weeks.

In the central area of the city, including Wards 1, 2, 6 and the southern portion of Ward 5, leaves will be collected along with regular street and alley cleaning operations once every two or four weeks. Leaves will be removed from alleys throughout the city along with regular alley cleaning activities. In addition to its regular crews, 100 temporary employees are being made available to the city under the Comprehensive Employment Training Program to help with this year's leaf collection.
