The winter ice skating season has already begun at the Montgomery County Parks Department skating rinks at Wheaton Regional Park, on Orebaugh and Arcola Avenues in Wheaton; and at Cabin John Regional Park, at 10610 Westlake Dr., in Rockville.

Each rink has a warming room, snack bar, first aid facilities, skate rental and skate sharpening services. Skating lessons for beginners through advanced skaters are also offered, and registration for the second session of lessons is scheduled for Dec. 12 through 14.

Admission fees for the rinks are $1.25 for adults and $1 for those 17 years old and younger. Skates can be rented for 85 cents, and lockers are available for 25 cents. The rinks generally have four or five sessions per day, with some sessions for general public skating and some reserved for special groups or lessons. For specific information on sessions or registration, call the Wheaton rink at 649-2250, or the Cabin John facility at 365-0585.

A special hockey program is also available for boys six through 18 years old, and information is available by calling 299-3953. The ice rinks can be leased by the general public on a first come first served basis. For information on leasing ice skating rinks, call the registrar at 649-3640.

If speed skating is your interest, the Speek Skating Club of Washington meets at the Wheaton rink, and details are available by calling 441-2020.
