Extended Area Forecast for Thursday through Saturday: Mild with occasional rain through the period. Highs will be in the 50s, lows from the mid 30s to the mid 40s. Normal Washington temperatures for the period are a high of 49 and a low of 33.

West Virginia: Today - Rain, high in the 40s, low from the mid 30s to the low 40s. Wednesday - Rain, highs in the 50s.

The National Weather Forecast for today - Rain will spread over much of the East, extended from the lower Mississippi valley to the middle and southern Atlantic coast. Scattered thunderstorms are likely over the Gulf coast, while snow is possible in the southern Great Lakes. Rain will aslo fall over the northern Pacific coast, with scattered rain and snow showers reaching inland to the northern Rockies. Skies will be partly cloudy over New England, the Plains and most of the Rockies. Sunshine will dominate the Southwest. Temperatures will be seasonably cool in most areas, except for mild to warm readings over Florida and southern California.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. period was 6 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidant. Index values between zero and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will be good.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should be near 4.2 feet today.
