Maryland and Virginia: Today - Rain, heavy at times, highs will range from the mid 50s to upper 60s, lows from the mid 30s to mid 50s. Friday - Variable cloudiness, windy and cooler, highs from the mid 40s to near 60s.

West Virginia: Today - SHowers and thundershowers, possibly mixed with or changing to snow by Friday morning, highs from the upper 50s to mid 60s, lows int he 30s. Friday - Colder, with a chance of snow showers, highs in the 30s and low 40s.

Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay - Rain, heavy at times, with winds shifting to the south a 10 to 20 knots by afternoon.Waves will average near 2 feet. Visibility will be 1 to 3 miles except less than 1 mile in morning fog.

Extended Area Outlook for Saturday through Monday - Partly cloudy Saturday. Chance of rain Sunday and Monday. Highs will average in the 40s and low 50s and lows in the 30s. Normal Washington temperatures for the period are a high of 49 and a low of 32.

The National Weather Forecast for today - showers will occur from the middle and lower Mississippi Valley to the Atlantic Coast states, reaching as far north as the southern Great Lakes region. THundershowers will also be scattered along the south Atlantic Coast. Snow showers and flurries are likely over the northern and the northern and western Great Lakes region and upper Mississippi Valley. Another area of rain and snow will spread from the northern Pacific Coast into the northern Rockies. Skies will be cloudy over the northern Plains, but clear or partly cloudy skies will prevail elsewhere. Temperatures will be warmer in the Appalachians and along most of the Atlantic Coast. Colder weather will move into the northern and central Rockies and extreme northern Plains. The rest of the nation will be seasonably cool.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday snowed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 11 for the pollutant, suflur dioxide. Index values between 0 and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will remain good.
