Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay: Today - Fair with visibility of more than 5 miles. Wind will be variable at from 5 to 10 knots. Waves in unprotected waters will be near 1 foot.

West Virginia: Today - Partly cloudy, highs from the 40s to the mid 50s, lows from the mid 20s to the mid 30s. Saturday - Partly cloudy, highs from the 40s to the mid 50s.

Extended Area Forecast for Sunday through Tuesday: Chance of rain on Sunday and Monday, fair on Tuesday. Highs will be from the upper 40s to the mid 50s, lows from the low 30s to near 40. Normal Washington temperatures for the period are a high of 48 and a low of 32.

The National Weather Forecast for today - Rain will fall along the Atlantic Coast from Maine to the Carolinas and some rain and snow showers will remain over the northern and eastern sections of the great lakes. Rain with snow over the mountains will scatter from the northern Pacific Coast into the northwestern Plains. Most other areas of the country will be clear or partly cloudy. Temperatures will be colder from the lower Great Lakes across the Appalachians into the middle and south Atlantic Coast but it will be a little warmer in New England. Warmer readings are also forecast from the central Rockies into the southern Plains. Seasonably cool temperatures are expected elsewhere.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. period was 6 for the pollutant carbon monoxide. Index values between zero and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will be good.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should be near 5 feet today.
