A 47-year-old surgeon was shot three times and seriously wounded yesterday in a parking lot outside his office at 800 Southern Ave. SE in what D.C. police said was an unexplained and apparently unprovoked incident. Nothing was stolen, police said.

The victim was identified as Dr. Kavoos Sinai, of Oxon Hill, who is a surgeon on the staff of Greater Southeast Community Hospital. He also maintains offices on Southern Avenue SE.

He was taken to the hospital after the 12:30 p.m. shooting with gunshot wounds in the face, back and leg, and was reported in serious condition.

Police said they arrested Willard Johnson, 53, of 800 Southern Ave. SE, and charged him with assault with intent to kill in connection with the shooting.

Although Johnson is listed at the building where the victim has offices, homicide detective M.L. Williams, who investigated the shooting, said he could find nothing else to link the victim to the suspect.

Det. Williams said the suspect was being held yesterday in the lockup ward at D.C. General Hospital where he was taken for treatment of minor lacerations to the head apparently suffered in a struggle. Williams said he did not know precisly how the lacerations were inflicted.
