Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay - Chance of snow or sleet developing by afternoon. Winds will shift to the north at 15 knots by nightfall. Visibility will be 5 miles or more diminishing to less than 1 mile in precipitation.

West Virginia: Today - mostly cloudy with snow likely by afternoon, high in the mid 20s to mid 30s, low in the teens and low 20s. Friday - Cloudy, highs will range from the mid 20s to mid 30s.

Extended Area Forecast for Saturday through Monday - Chance of snow late Friday or early Saturday otherwise partly cloudy and continued cold. Highs will be mostly in the 30s, lows in the teens and 20s. Normal Washington temperatures for the period are a high of 47 and a low of 29.

The National Weather Forecast for today - Temperatures will be very cold from the Upper Missouri Valley through the western Plains, and cold over the remainder of the nation. Rain will extended across the Gulf states from eastern Texas through central Florida, and over the eastern coastal states into Virginia. Rain will change to freezing rain then snow from the Tennessee Valley across much of the Ohio Valley and the central Appalachians. Snow is likely from eastern Idaho into the mountains of northern Arizona across the central and southern Rockies into the western portion of the central Plains.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yersterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 30 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 25 and 49 indicate fair air quality.
