A 32-year-old Oxon Hill man was shot and killed Wednesday night by a Mount Rainer policeman after the suspect was allegedly involved in the robbery of a liquor store at 3416 Rhode Island Ave., county police said . (KEY OFF) olice (KEYWORD) said Robert Frost Stuart of 5526 Livingston Ter. was shot in the chest when he reached into his jacket after the police officer ordered him to halt.
Police said the incident began at 11 p.m. when two armed gunmen entered Bailey's liquor store across the street from the Mount Rainer Police Department and announced a holdup.
When a silent alarm was tripped alerting police to the robbery attempt, officer Jack Clements ran across the street and took cover outside the store.
Moments later, two men left through the front door of the liquor store. Clements ordered them to stop and then fired his weapon when one appeared to be reaching into his jacket, police said.
Both men then reentered the store where the wounded man gave himself up, according to police.
The other man attempted to leave through the rear of the store, taking as a hostage the store manager, police said. But a neighbour, responding to the noise, grabbed his gun and raced to the near of the building, intercepting the fleeing suspect, police said.
The suspect then surrendered, according to police.
Willie Williams, 18, of 5522 Livingston Ter., Oxon Hill, was arrested at the scene uninjured. He was being held in lieu of $25,000 bond in the Upper Marlboro Detention Center on charges of armed robbery.
Police said Stuart was taken to Prince George's General Hospital where he died at 11:50 p.m.
Clements was placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of the investigation into the shooting, an action taken routinely whenever an weapon is fired by a police officer, police said.
