Extended Area Forecast for Thursday through Saturday: Fair through the period. Highs will be from the 40s to the 50s, lows from the mid 20s to the upper 30s. Normal Washington temperatures for the period are a high of 55 and a low of 35.

West Virginia: Today - Rain, highs from the mid 50s of the low 60s, low from the upper 30s to the upper 40s. Wednesday - Rain, highs from the upper 30s to the upper 40s.

The National Weather Forecast for today - Showers and thundershowers will reach from the lower Mississippi Valley eastward through the Carolinas and Florida. Rain will fall from the eastern Great Lakes and the mid-Mississippi Valley to the Atlantic Coast. Snow or snow flurries will reach from the western Great Lakes across the northern Plains. The Pacific Northwest and the central Intermountain region will have showers. Fair or partly cloudy skies will prevail elsewhere. Temperatures will be cooler from the mid-Mississippi Valley across the Great Lakes and mid over the Gulf Coast, the southern Atlantic and Eastern portions, of mid-Atlantic Coast states. Elsewhere little change will occur, while readings will be at or near seasonal levels.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. period was 75 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 50 and 99 indicate unhealthy air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will improve.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should be near 4.5 feet today.
