National Weather Summary for yesterday: Low pressure system over southern Missouri brought winter weather back to the middle Mississippi Valley yesterday. Snowfall was reported from eastern Kansas through western and northern Missouri into central Illinois. Rain covered southeast Missouri and southern Illinois with scattered showers and thunderstorms reaching to the Gulf Coast, the northern Pacific coastal region, the Rocky Mountains and the northern Great Lakes Area. Skies were generally sunny over the southwestern states, the upper Mississippi Valley and New England. It was partly cloudy over the Southeast as well as most of the Plains and Rocky Mountain regions.

National Weather Forecast for today: Rain will extend from the middle Mississippi Valley to the middle and southern Atlantic Coast, with thunderstorms likely from the Carolinas into Florida. Scattered snow will fall in the Great Lakes region and parts of the northern Ohio Valley. Rain is possible in North Dakota and in western Washington. Mostly sunny and mild weather will prevail over the western Plains, the Rocky Mountain region and much of the Far West. Sunshine will also be abundant over Texas, the lower Mississippi Valley and New England. It will be generally cool from the Mississippi Valley to the East Coast.

When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye aliments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will improve.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should be near 6.6 feet today. Stages above five feet are considered hazardous for recreational activities.
