The National Weather Forecast for today - Scattered shower will reach from northern California and the Pacific Northwest across Idaho and Montana and the northern Plains. Rain will dampen the upper Mississippi Valley and the upper Great Lakes. Thunderstorms and showers will cover Nebraska and eastern Kansas across the middle and lower Mississippi and the Ohio Valley to the Atlantic Coast. The rest of the nation will be sunny or partly cloudy. Except for mild weather over the Gulf Coast and Georgia, the nation wlll be seasonably cool.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. period was 38 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants, Index values between 25 and 49 indicate fair quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will improve.
