The National Weather Forecast for today: Showers will be scattered through western New England. Showers and occasional thundershowers will extend from the lower Ohio Valley through much of the Mississippi Valley, across the Central Plains, the Missouri Valley, the Northern Rockies, and the northwest Pacific Coast. Temperatures will be unseasonably cool from New England and the Great Lakes, across the lower Ohio Valley, the northern Mississippi Valley, and the Pacific Coast from Washington into southern California. Temperatures elsewhere around the nation will be mild.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. period was 39 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 25 and 49 indicate fair air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will improve.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should be near 3.9 feet today.
