Dr. Thorval L. Hickman, 69, who taught pediatrics at Georgetown University for 20 years and then practiced pediatrics in Southeast Washington from 1969 until his death, died of a heart ailment Friday at Washington Hospital Center.

Dr. Hickman earned a medical degree at George Washington University in 1941. He was an intern, resident, and then assistant director of the prediatrics department at the old Gallinger Hospital.

He began a private practice in Southeast Washington in 1947, and then taught pediatrics at Georgetown University from 1946 to 1966.

Dr. Hickman than returned to pediatrics pratice, first with Group Health Associates from 1969 to 1975, and then with Pediatric Associates.

Dr. Hickman was born in Beaver, Utah. He spent two years in Germany on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.He attended the University of Berlin, before returning to Utah State University in 1934.

He was a member of the Chevy Chase Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints.

He is survived by his wife, Vera, of the home in Washington; three sons, Thorval L. Jr., of Columbia, Md., Rodney A., of Boulder City, Nev., and Kyrm L., of Texas City, Tex.; two daughters, Reinna Lynn, of Paris, France, and Martha A. Hampton, of Herndon, Va.; a brother, Dr. Kyrmel L., of Fresco, Calif.; three sisters, Lorea Blonquist, of Coleville, Utah, Juanita Whitehead, of Citrus Heights, Calif., and Marva Hansen, of Logan, Utah, and 12 grandchildren.
