Winners of the 1978 College-Sponsored Four-Year Merit Scholarships were announced today. Each of the 1,795 winners awards ranging from $1,000 to $6,000, depending upon financial need. Winners in the District of Columbia are:
John J. Steele, 3341 Rittenhouse St., Gonzaga College High School - College of the Holy Cross. Steele, vice president of the math club, is a memeber of the varsity basketball team.
Allen, G. Gibbs, 4205 Howard Rd., Beltsville Md., Gonzaga College High School - University of Chicago. Gibbs twice a U.S. Math Olympian, has won several math and science grants.
Frank T. Litton, 4111 Charleston, W.Va., Saint Albans School - Washington University. Litton is a biology tutor and plays soccer and lacrosse.
Karl G. Olson, 4815 Camelot St., Rockville, Md., Gonzaga College High School - University of Chicago. Olson, the student Congress Team vice president has won a National Science Foundation grant in math, and several science fair awards.
Winners of the 1978 Merit $1,000 Scholarships were announced last week. The winners each will receive an award of $1,000 Funds come from grants to the National Merit Scholarship Corp.
The winners in the District of Columbia are:
James B. DeLong, 4840 Glenbrook Rd. NW, Sidwell Friends School. DeLong is a member of the Cum Laude Society, the "It's Academic" team captain and is on the headmaster's list.
Justin Whittington, 5819 Chevy Chase Pkwy., Gonzaga College High School. Whittington, who has won a National Science Foundation grant, is captain of the football team and Classics Club president.
