The National Weather Forecast for today . . . rain will fall over northern Maine. Rain and thunderstorms will reach from Florida and the Gulf Coastal states across the lower third of the Mississippi Valley into Oklahoma. Rain and occasional thundershowers will also extend from the upper Mississippi Valley across the northern third of the Rockies. Temperatures will be warm from Florida across the Gulf Coast through west Texas and along the pacific Coast. It will also be warm over the upper Ohio Valley and upper Great Lakes. Temperatures will be cool from the northern half of the Plains through the Great Basin and northern intermountain region. Elsewhere temperatures over the nation will remain seasonably mild.

Extended Area Forecast for Sunday through Tuesday: Chance of thundershowers Sunday, partly cloudy Monday and Tuesday. Highs will range from the mid 70s to the low 80s, lows will range from the mid 50s to the low 60s. Normal Washington temperatures for the period are a high of 78 and a low 58.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 to 3 p.m. period was 45 for the pollutantphoto-chemical oxidants. Index values between 25 & 49 indicate fair air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye aliments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will improve.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should be near 9 feet today.
