Extended Area Outlook for Tuesday through Thursday: Fair Tuesday, with a chance of rain on Wednesday and Thursday. Highs will be in the 80s, and lows in the 60s. Normal Washington temperatures for the period are a high of 81 and low of 60.

The National Weather Forecast for today - Scattered thunderstorms and showers will extend from Texas and the Great Plains over the western half of the Great Lakes region to the Mississippi River and east over the remainder of the Gulf Coast states. There will be scattered showers from the pacific northwest through west and south Montana, Idaho, much of Nevada, Utah, Wyoming and Colorado. Except for sunny skies over the southwestern states and the southern Rockies, partly cloudy conditions will exist elsewhere. It will be mild over the middle Atlantic Coast states but the rest of the nation from the Mississippi Valley to the East Coast will be warm. It will also be warm over southern California. Mild conditions will continue from the southwest deserts across the southern Rockles and the Great Plains. The rest of the country will be seasonably cool.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 12 to 1 p.m. period was 15 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 0 and 25 indicate good air quality. When the Index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will remain good.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River Stage at Little Falls should fall slowly to 4.6 feel today.
