Atlantic Ocean Beaches from New Jersey to North Carolina: Wednesday - Partly cloudy, high near 80. Water temperatures will range from 55 to 60 from Maryland northward and 60 to 65 from Virginia southward. Thursday - Sunny, high in the low 80s.

The national weather forecast for today - Showers and thunderstorms will be numerous from the central and northern Rockies to the upper Mississippi Valley. Widely scattered thunderstorm activity will be found over the eastern third of the nation and the Gulf Coast states, otherwise skies will be partly cloudy. Sunshine will dominate the Southwest and the Pacific Coast states. It will be cool from the Northern Plateau region through the Rocky Mountain states and the central and northern Plains. Temperatures will be warm in other parts of the nation, except for mid reading in the Pacific Northwest and along the mid Atlantic Coast.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 110 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants.
