West Virginia: Today - Partly cloudy, highs in the 80s, lows in the mid 50s. There will be a chance of rain or thundershowers through tonight, except in the eastern pan-handle. Saturday - Partly cloudy high in the 70s.

The national weather forecast for today - Rain and thunderstorms will be scattered from northern New England through the Ohio Valley, most of the southeast, and the central and southern Plains. A few showers or thunderstorms will fall on the Rocky Mountain region and the upper Great Lakes area Sunny skies will prevail over the Western third of the nation and the northern Plains. Temperatures will be warm over the southeastern U.S. and the East Coast states, except for cool readings over New England. It will also be cool from the central and northern plateau region through the middle and upper Mississippi valley. Mild weather will be found over the remainder of the nation.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 to 3 p.m. period was 44 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 25 and 49 indicates fair air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality has improve.
