Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay: Today - Fair, visibility more than five miles. Winds will be westerly becoming variable, 6 to 12 knots. Waves in unprotected waters will be one foot.

Atlantic Ocean Beaches from New Jersey to North Carolina: Today - Sunny, highs from 70 to mid 70s. Friday - Partly cloudy, highs in the upper 70s to the north and mid 80s in the south. Water temperatures near 60 in the far north and mid 60s elsewhere.

Extended Area Outlook for Saturday through Monday: Fair and very warm through the period. Highs will average in the upper 80s & and lows mostly in the 60s. Normal Washington temperatures for the period will be a high of 85 and a low of 65.

The Nation Yesterday: Thunderstorms extended into northeastern Nebraska and eastern South Dakota. Thunderstorms also continued over Wisconsin and a small part of northwest Texas. A few storms developed over northern Florida and scattered showers still fell over the coastal sections of the Pacific northwest and in northern New England. Elsewhere, mild weather prevailed. A warm day was in prospect for the central Plains, where readings had already reached the mid 80s. The same large high pressure that brought the cold temperatures produced sunny skies over much of the Ohio Valley and the middle Atlantic Coast states.

The National Weather Forecast for today scattered showers will fall over Montana and mainly the mountains of Idaho. Isolated thundershowers will fall over northeastern New Mexico, Wyoming and Colorado. There will also be thundershowers from western Nebraska across the Dakotas into Wisconsin, Oklahoma and South Texas. Outside of the rainfall area skies will be fair or sunny. Warmer temperatures will reach from the Ohio Valley across Pennsylvania, New York and New England. Somewhat cooler weather will be seen over the northern rockies. Elsewhere warm or mild readings will prevail with hot weather over much of the central Great Plains.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 to 3 p.m. period was 28 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 25 and 49 indicate fair air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will improve.
