The National Weather Forecast for today - Scattered showers with a chance of thundershowers will reach from New England across New York, Pennsylvania and the Ohio Valley. Thundershowers will be scattered from the Tennessee and lower Mississppi Valley over the mid Atlantic Coastal states. Widely scattered mostly afternoon thundershowers and showers shall appear over the Gulf Coast region, Florida and from Mississippi across the Dakotas, the northern Rockies, I daho and Utah. Fair skies will be seen elsewhere. It will be warmer over the Great Lakes region and the mid Mississippi Valley. Mild temperatures will prevail from the northern Plains across the northern half of the Rockies to the West Coast. It will be warm elsewhere, except for the southwest Deserts and southwest Texas which will be hot.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 1 p.m. period was 105 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 100 and 140 indicates very unhealthy air quality.
