The national weather forecast for today - Showers and thunder showers will extend from the upper Great Lakes across the lower Ohio Valley, the middle Mississippi and into the southern Plains. Showers will also be scattered across the Carolinas. There is a good chance for showers across Florida. Mild temperatures will accompany mostly sunny skies from the upper and middle Mississippi Valley areas across the Plains, northern Texas and westward across the Rockies and the Plateau regions to the Pacific. Warm temperatures and mostly sunny skies will cover the rest of the nation except for hot readings in southern Arizona and southern New Mexico.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 75 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. When the indes exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lungs, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will improve.
