The Nation Yesterday: In the Southwest locally heavy and slow moving storms brought a flash flood threat to several areas. Shower and thunderstorm activity was scattered thoughout the Rocky Mountain region and the central and northern Plains, as well as over the central Gulf Coast region, the southern Atlantic Coast and much of Florida. One thunderstorm spawned a tornado 30 miles east of Cheyenne, W. Va. It was again a scorching afternoon over the south central Plains area as temperatures climbed into the 100 to 105 degree range. Readings also easily topped 100 in the Desert Southwest. High pressure anchored over the northeastern quarter of the nation resulted in fair weather and pleasant temperature readings in the 70s and lower 80s.

The National Weather forecast for today - Showers and thunderstorms will be quite numerous over the Mississippi Valley region from Minnesota through Missouri and to the central Gulf Coast. Thunderstorms are also likely over Florida. Widely scattered showers or thundershowers will dot the Rocky Mountain region and the northern Plains. The remainder of the country will have mostly sunny skies. Hot temperatures will persist over the southern Plains, while it will be warm across the rest of the Southern states and over the north central part of the country. Mild weather will be seen over the Northeastern U.S. and the Pacific Northwest.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 27 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 25 and 49 indicate fair air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will remain about the same.

The National Westher Service forecasts the Potomac River Stage at Little Falls should fall near 3.8 feet today.
