Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay - Fair with visibility of 5 miles or more. Winds will be variable at up to 12 knots. Waves will average 1 to 2 feet.

Atlantic Ocean Beaches from New Jersey to North Carolina: Today and Wednesday - Sunny, highs in the upper 70s to low 80s. Water temperatures will range from the upper 60s in the north to the mid 70s in the south.

West Virginia: Today and Wednesday - Sunny, highs, from the mid 70s to mid 80s, lows from the low 50s to low 60s.

The National Weather Forecast for today - Showers and thunderstorms will range from Montana across the Dakotas into the middle and upper Mississippi Valley and the upper Great Lakes, and through the Gulf of Mexico coast area into Florida. There is also a chance for showers or thundershowers in parts of the central and southern Rockies, the southern Plateau and the central Plains. Sunny skies will prevail across most of the reminder of the nation. Mild temperatures will extend from the northern Plateau into the northern Plains, with hot weather expected in the southern half of the Plains and the middle Mississippi Valley. Warm conditions will prevail across most of the remainder of the nation.

The Council of Government Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 48 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 25 and 49 indicate fair air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will improve.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should remain near 16 feet today.
