Lower Potomac and Chesepeake Bay: Today - Fair, visibility more than five miles. Winds will be from the south at 10 to 15 mph. Waves in unprotected waters will be two feet.

Atlantic Ocean Beaches from New Jersey to North Carolina: It will be mostly sunny and warm today and Saturday, high in the low 80s. There will be slight chance of showers in the southern portions. Water temperatures will be in the upper 60s in the north and upper 70s in the south.

Extended Area Outlook for Sunday through Tuesday: Partly cloudy, warm and humid through the period with only isolated thundershowers. Highs will average from the mid 80s to the mid 90s. Normal Washington temperatures for the period will be a high of 89 and a low of 70.

West Virginia: Today - Hot, hazy and humid through Saturday. Highs will average in mid 80s to mid 90s, lows in the 70s through Saturday.

The National Weather Forecast for today - Showers and thunderstorms are likely in the Southeast from south central Texas to southern North Carolina. Thundershowers will dampen portions of the central Plains, the middle Mississippi Valley, the southern Great Lakes region, and along the international border to northern Maine. The heat wave will continue in the desert Southwest with temperatures around 110 degrees and around 100 degrees over the southern Plains, New Mexico, and Arizona. Mild temperatures will continue over the northern Rockies, the northern Plains, the upper Mississippi Valley, and the western portions of the Great Lakes. Temperatures are expected to remain mostly in the 70s. Skies will be mostly fair west of the Rockies and over most of the central and northern east Coast.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the reading in the Washington area during the 2 to 3 p.m. period was 100 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 100 and 249 indicates very unhealthy air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will improve.
