A 22-year-old man has been arrested and four Washington residents are being sought in connection with the armed robbery of the two managers and 16 customers at a Fairfax City motel a week ago, Fairfax City police said yesterday.

Police arrested Richard Carter Reese, who gave addresses in Newport News, Va., and Northwest Washington after he was stopped on speeding charges in Culpeper, Va., Saturday according to Sgt. Sam Ellis of the Fairfax City police. Reese has been charged in connection with the armed robbery of

,000 cash and wristwatches from 18 persons at the Patton Motor Hotel at 9990 Lee Highway, Ellis said.

Warrants have been issued for the arrest of Vincent Tyrone Coates, 19, 501 Virginia Ave. S.S. and Thomas Elwood Ross, 18, 1308 Clifton St. NW, Ellis said. The male juveniles from the District also are being sought, Ellis said.

According to police, five men wearing stocking masks and wielding shotguns forced their way into the motor hotel about 3:30 a.m. Thursday, July 20. They tied up the managers. Peter Brugman and his wife, with a telephone cord and then ripped the phone off the wall, police said.

The robbers then took about $500 cash from the hotel cash register and the 'Brugmans' wristwatches. While one robber stood guard over the Brugmans, the other four took a master key to all the hotel rooms and broke into each of the rooms one by one, dragging the victims to the manager's office, police said. One woman, a motel guest, was pistol whipped by one member of the five when a woman started screaming, police said. The woman's injuries were minor, officers said.

The robbers collected about $500 and more wristwatches from the guests before fleeing in two automobiles, police said. The entire incident lasted about 20 minutes, police said.

Sgt. Jim Waddell of the Fauquier County sheriff's department said a state trooper who arrested Reese on speeding charges notified that the car Reese was driving fit the description of a car driven by a robber wanted in connection with a robbery at Johnson's Motel and Restaurant five miles south of Warrenton.

Fauqier County officers later charged Reese with five counts of armed robbery and six counts of breaking and entering in connection with the Johnson motel incident. Waddell said. Reese is being held in lieu of $122,000 bond in the Fauquier County jail.

Fairfax police said Fauquier authorities alerted them to the case because Reese's car was similar to one being sought in connection with the motel robberies.
