Atlantic Ocean Beaches from New Jersey to North Carolina: Today and Thursday - Variable cloudiness, warm and humid with a chance of mainly afternoon and evening thunderstorms high in the 80s. Water temperatures will range from 70 in the north to near 80 in North Carolina.

West Virginia: Today - Partly cloudy, high in the 80s, low from the mid 50s to mid 60s. Thursday - Partly cloudy with a chance of showers and thunderstorms, high in the 80s.

The National Weather Forecast for today - Showers and thundershowers will spread from the mid and south Atlantic Coast states over the Appalachians, the Great Lakes region and west through the Great Plains. The Rockies and parts of the Intermountain Region will have widely scattered thundershowers. Scattered thundershowers over portions of northern New England. Sunny skies will dominate the rest of the country. It will be cooler over northern portions of both the Great Plains and the Rockies and also in Idaho, Western Washington and Nebraska. Hot weather will continue over Oregon and northern California. The rest of the nation will be seasonably warm.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 35 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will remain fair.
