Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay - Chance of showers or thunderstorms through tonight. Visibility will be 1 to 3 miles diminishing to less than l mile in morning fog and precipitation. Winds will be from the southwest at 12 to 18 knots shifting to the west at 10 knots by nightfall.

Atlantic Ocean Beaches from New Jersey to North Carolina: Today - Partly cloudy, warm and humid with a chance of showers or thunderstorms mostly in the north, high in the 80s. Wednesday - Cloudy and cooler, with a chance of showers, high in the 80s. Water temperatures will range from the 70s in the north to 80 in North Carolina.

West Virginia: Today - Partial clearing and cooler, highs from the mid 70s to the mid 80s, lows in the upper 50s to mid 60s. Wednesday - Increasing cloudiness with a chance of rain, high in the upper 70s to mid 80s.

The National Weather Forecast for today - Showers and thunderstorms will range from the southern Rockies across the lower Mississippi Valley and to the [WORD ILLEGIBLE] from northern Florida through New England. Skies will be mostly sunny from the Pacific Coast across the northern and central Rockies into portions of the middle Mississippi Valley. Temperatures will be mild over most of the Plains and northern half of the Mississippi Valley and through the Great Lakes into New England. It will continue hot over much of California and into southern Arizona. Most of the remainder of the nation can expect warm temperatures.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 50 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 50 and 99 indicate unhealthy air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity.The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will remain about the same.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River Stage at Little Falls should rise to near 3.5 feet today.
