The Citywide Housing Coalition, an activist organization of tenants, yesterday endorsed Douglas E. Moore for D.C. City Council chairman and Abealom F. Jordan Jr. for an at-large Democratic seat on the council.
At a District Building news conference, the group also supported four others for council nominations and declared the opposition to all three front running Democrats in the race for mayor.
[WORD ILLEGIBLE] Onwuachi, who chairs the coalition said it took the stand against incumbent Mayor Walter E. Washington [WORD ILLEGIBLE] Marion Barry and Sterling higher because it regards all three as probusiness and prolandlord.
The organization with a membership of about 600 tenant organizations and individuals, supports strict rent controls, stabilized or lowered real estate taxes and utility rates and strict restraints on evictions and condominium conversions.
Moore and Jordan , accepting the endorsements, peppered their speeches with attacks on the Washington Board of Realtors and the Metropolitan Washington Board of Trade.
In another citywide race, the coalition endorsed Hilda Maron for reelection to a second at-large council seat on the Statehood Party ticket.
In Ward 5, it endorsed John M. (Jack) Thornton. In Ward 6, it endorsed Democratic aspirant George Gurley and Statehood Party aspirant Anton Wood who, if nominated, would have to run against each other in the Nov. 7 general election.
The coalition made no endorsements in the Ward 1 and Ward 3 council races.
