All federal, state and local government offices in Virginia, the District of Columbia and Maryland, except for those that provide essential services, will be closed Monday in observance of Labor Day.

Metrobuses will operate on a Sunday schedule, while the subway will be closed throughout the three-day weekend.

Banks will be closed Monday throughout the District, Virginia and Maryland. Many liquor stores will be open in the District, and Maryland, but state-run stores in Virginia will be closed.

The Postal Service reported that all area post offices would be closed, and that there would be no regular mail deliveries. However, mail will be collected from all collection boxes and special delivery and express mail service will be provided.

Trash collections in the District usually made on Monday are scheduled for Tuesday, and Tuesday collections are scheduled for Wednesday. Normal services will be resumed on Thursday and Friday.

In Prince George's and Montgomery counties, trash collections usually made on Monday are scheduled for Thursday. Trash collections will be made Monday in Fairfax and Arlington counties and in Alexandria.

Major food chain stores in the metropolitan area will follow regular weekday schedules on Monday. Major department stores also will be open.

Weekday traffic regulations will not be in effect in the District Monday, and parking meter payments will not be required.
