The Nation Yesterday: Very few clouds were left to repel the warm September sun over most of the nation. Sunny skies ranged from Wyoming to Pennsylvania and from Georgia to southern California. Temperatures in the Plains were already into the upper 90s. Southern Texans were getting some relief. Thundershowers were scattered from Midland to Houston into Mexico. The heavier showers developed along the coast. The rain was persistent over the northwestern corner of the nation. Showers were scattered from northern Nevada, through Idaho and western Wyoming, to the Pacific. Only light amounts were recorded. Cool air was filtering into the valleys of the northern Rockies. Frost formed at Jackson, Wy. this morning when the temperature dipped to 24 degrees. In the valleys of southwestern Oregon, Klamath Falls fell to 37 degrees. The Great Lakes region had a few showers today, mostly in western New York. A few thundershowers continued along the southern Florida coast and the southern Atlantic states coast.

The National Weather Forecast for today - Most of the nation will have a sunny and warm day. Showers will move into Montana with a few crossing over into Wyoming, northern Utah, and northwestern Colorado. Scattered thundershowers will persist through the eastern half of Texas, southern Louisiana and southern Florida. A few showers will pass through the upper Great Lakes region, Pennsylvania, and New York. The only hot spots will be in the deserts of Arizona. Rather cool weather, mostly in the 60s, will prevail over the Pacific Northwest and northern New England.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 to 3 p.m. period was 75 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 50 and 99 indicate unhealthy air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will improve.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River Stage at Little Falls should remain at 3.3 feet today.

Extended Area Outlook for Sunday through Tuesday: Partly cloudy and quite warm with a chance of showers late Monday or Tuesday. Highs will be in 80s to low 90s and lows from the 60s to low 70s. Normal Washington temperatures for the period will be a high of 82 and a low of 63.
