The Council of Government's Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 1 p.m. period was 34 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 25 and 19 indicates fair air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will remain the same.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River Stage at Little Falls should remain near 3.0 feet today.

The Nation Yesterday: Rain was widespread along the coast of Washington Oregon, and California north of San Francisco. The cloudy skies extended well into Nevada and Idaho. In the South, a tropical low formed near the coast of Brownsville, Tex. endangering small boats. The depression will climb ashore this afternoon spreading even more rain through southern Texas. Heavy thundershowers were scattered through eastern Texas, Oklahoma, the remainder of the Gulf Coast. Only a few showers remained in northern New England. The warm sun was breaking up the cloudy skies but the temperatures were still rather cool, mostly in the 50s. The sun was bathing most of inland America. The Plains were warming up rapidly, many places already in the 90s. The South was warm and humid.

The National Weather Forecast for today. Most of the nation will enjoy a sunny and warm day. Thundershowers will continue through eastern Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, the remainder of the Gulf Coast, and Florida. Showers will spread over the northwest corner of the nation from northern Nevada and Idaho to the Pacific, with heavier showers in Washington and Oregon. A few showers are also expected in the Ohio Valley. The deserts of southern Arizona will be hot with temperatures in the 100s. The Pacific Northwest will remain in the 60s all day. Northern New England will be cool.

Extended Area Outlook for Tuesday through Thursday: There will be a chance of showers on Tuesday, otherwise it will be fair. Highs will be in the 70s and lower 80s and lows in the 60s except 50s in the mountains. Normal Washington temperatures for the period would a high of 81 and a low of 62.

Washington: Today - Partly cloudy, high in low 80s, low in mid 60s. Chance of rain is 20 percent today and 10 percent tonight. Winds will be easterly at 10 mph. Monday - Partly cloudy with a chance of rain in the afternoon, high 81 to 86.

Maryland and Virginia: Today - Variable cloudiness, high in mid 80s, low in 60s. Monday - Partly cloudy with a chance of showers, high in mid 80s.

Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay: Today - Partly cloudy, visibility more than five miles. Winds will be easterly at 10 knots. Waves in unprotectd waters will be two feet.

Atlantic Ocean Beaches from New Jersey to North Carolina: Today - Variable cloudiness with highs near 80. Monday - Variable cloudiness and a little warmer with highs in 80s.
