Extended Area Forecast for Thursday through Saturday - Variable cloudiness with a chance of showers and thunderstorms each day. Highs will be in the 70s to near 80, lows in the 60s. Normal Washington temperatures are a high of 81 and a low of 61.

The National Weather Forecast for today - Showers and occasional thunderstorms will extend from the Atlantic Coast across much of the Mississippi Valley, the northern half of the Plains, the central Rockies and the upper Missouri Valley. Showers will continue over southern Texas. Temperatures will be cool over northern New England as well as from the upper Great Lakes across the northern half of the Plains, the northern half of the Rockies and the Great Basin. Warm temperatures will reach from southern New England through Florida, across the Gulf Coast states, the Ohio Valley, and the Pacific Coast. Temperatures eleswhere over the nation will remain generally mild.

The Council of Governments' Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 35 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 25 and 49 indicate for air quality.

When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will improve.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should remain near 3.0 feet today.

Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay - Partly cloudy with a chance of thunderstorms. Visibility will be 5 miles or more diminishing to less than 1 mile in rain. Winds will shift to the southwest at up to 15 knots. Waves will average up to 2 feet.
