A district taxicab driver was found shot to death in his parked cab last night in the 1100 block of 2nd Street NE, D.C. police reported.
The victim was identified as Lloyd D. Jones, 31, a driver with the Autorama Cab Co. of Washington.Police said he had been shot once in the left side of the neck, apparently from inside the cab by a passenger.
Jones, who lived at 622 Eastern Ave. NE, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after his body was discovered by a neighborhood resident about 6 p.m. Police said it appeared that the shooting could have taken place up to an hour or so earlier.
Investigators said last night they believed Jones was slain during a robbery or attempted robbery. But they said it was unclear whether Jones had been shot before dropping off a fare or after just picking one up. Investigators indicated last night that the latter seemed more likely, but they declined to provide further details.
Jones was married, police said, but it was not known whether he had any children.
Police said 45 cab drivers have been robbed in the District this year. Jones was the fourth driver to die during a robbery attempt since April.
