Extended Area Forecast for Friday through Sunday - Cooler with a chance of showers and thunderstorms the first half of the period followed by partial clearing. Highs will average in the 80s on Friday, in the 70s over the weekend, lows in the 60s. Normal Washington temperatures are a high of 78 and a low of 59.

Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay - Cloudy with occasional morning drizzle. Visibility will improve to 1 to 3 miles by afternoon. Winds will be from the northeast at 12 to 18 knots diminishing to less than 10 knots during the evening. Waves will average 1 to 2 feet.

West Virginia: Today and Thursday - Partly cloudy, warm and humid with a chance of mainly afternoon or evening thundershowers, highs in the 80s to near 90, low in the 60s.

The National Weather Forecast for today - Scattered rain and snow showers will be ending in Montana, but spreading into the western half of North Dakota. Snow showers will continue in Utah across western portions of Colorado and Wyoming. Showers with a few thunderstorms will extend from the central Plains across the Great Lakes region and the upper Ohio Valley into western New England. Widely scattered thundershowers will remain over the Texas coastal plains, Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida. Mild temperatures will cover New England, New York state, the upper Great Lakes region and the upper Mississippi Valley. Cool temperatures will continue from inland California and the Pacific Northwest across the Rockies and the north and central Plains . Temperatures will be hot over Georgia, the Carolinas and Virginia, but the remainder of the nation will be warm.

The Council of Government's Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 41 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 25 and 49 indicate fair air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will improve.
