Atlantic Ocean Beaches from New Jersey to North Carolina: Today - Partly cloudy and pleasant with little chance of rain. Highs will be from the mid 70s to around 80. Monday - Partly cloudy, high in mid 70s to around 80. Water temperatures will be in the low 70s in north to near 80 in the south.

Extended Area Outlook for Tuesday through Thursday: Fair weather with pleasant days and cool nights should prevail through the period. Highs will average in the 70s and lows in the 50s to low 60s. Normal Washington temperatures for the period will be a high of 77 and a low of 57.

The nation yesterday: Mild Temperatures dominated the country on this the first day of autumn. Afternoon temperature readings were mostly in the 60s and 70s over much of the nation, with 80 degree readings confined mainly to the Gulf Coast region, south Pacific coast and southern Plateau. The southern California coast was unreasonably hot today as readings climbed into the high 90s. A temperature of 100 degrees was recorded.

The national weather forecast for today, showers with some thunderstorms will extend from New Mexico across south Texas and along the Atlantic Coast from Florida into Virginia. Fair skies will be found over much of the rest of the nation. Mild temperatures are forecast for the majority of the country with seasonably warm readings expected across southern Louisana, Florida and into South Carolina as well as upper Michigan. Cool temperatures will cover northern Kentucky and West Virginia, while southern California will remain unseasonably hot.

The Council of Government's Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 12 to 1 p.m. period was 15 for the pollutant, photo-chemical oxidants. Index values between 0 and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will remain good.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should remain at 3 feet today.
