The National Weather Forecast for today - A cold front will spread rain throughout the Mississippi Valey. The remainder of the nation will be dry. Sunny skies will continue across the Eastern Seaboard, the Rockies and the remainder of the West. Cool temperatures will continue from North Dakota through the Great Lakes region, into northern New England. The deserts of southern California and southwestern Arizona will be hot. Warm weather will continue across the south and mild conditions will prevail elsewhere.

The Council of Government's Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 21 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 6 and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will remain about the same.
