The National Weather Forecast for today-Showers and thundershowers will extend across northern Washington state into northwestern Montana, and from portions of the upper Mississippi Valley across the Great Lakes and the Ohio Valley to the Carolinas. Skies will be mostly sunny from California and Oregon across most of the Plateau Region into the southern Plains, and over much of the north Atlantic Coast states. Temperatures will be warm along the California Coast and over southern Florida. Mild temperatures will prevail from the remainder of California and Oregon across the southern halt of the Plains, and from the lower Mississippi Valley through the Gulf Coast region and Florida into the eastern Carolina. The remainder of the country will be cool.

The Council of Government's Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 3 p.m. period was 19 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 0 and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individuals with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicated that the air quality will remain good.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should remain near 2.9 feet today.
