The Nation Yesterday: Showers or thundershowers spread from parts of South Dakota and Nebraska across Iowa and Illinois into the lower Ohio Valley, and alone the Carolina and Florida coasts. Widely scattered showers were located in parts of the Tennesse Valley, eastern Great Lakes, and central New England.Skies were mostly sunny from parts of California and Oregon across the Plateau and southern Rockies, portions of the southern Plains, the lower and middle Mississippi Valley, and lower Ohio Valley to the East Coast states from northern South Carolina to Pennsylvania. Winds to 30 mph., occasionally stronger, were resorted from northern Minnesota across Upper Michigan to northern Lower Michigan.

The national weather forecast for today - showers and thunderstorms will range from eastern portions of the lower and middle Mississippi Valley and the eastern two thirds of the Great Lakes through the Tennessee and Ohio Valleys to the middle and north Atlantic Coast states. There will be scattered to widely scattered showers through portions of the south Atlantic Coast states. Skies will be mostly sunny from the West Coast states across the Plateau region into the southern half of the Plains. Temperatures will be warm along the California coast. Mild temperatures will prevail from inland California and the Pacific Northwest through the Plataeu, across much of Texas and the Gulf Coast states, the south and middle Atlantic Coast states and the eastern north Atlantic Coast states. The remainder of the nation will be cool.

The Council of Government's Air Quality index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 to 3 p.m. period was 38 for the pollutant, photo-chemical oxidents. Index values between 25 and 49 indicate fair air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very inhealthy and individuals with lung-heart and eye ailments are urged to restricted their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will improve.

The National Weather Service forecasts the Potomac River stage at Little Falls should remain nearly 2.9 feet today.
