Lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay: Today - Fair, visibility more than five miles. Winds will be southerly at 15 knots. Waves in unprotected waters will be one foot.

Extended Area Outlook for Monday through Wednesday: Warm and clouding up with a chance of rain by the middle of the period. The highs will be in the 70s and lows in the upper 40s and 50s. Gradual clearing and turning cooler on Wednesday, highs in the 60s and lows in 40s. Normal Washington temperatures for the period will be a high of 67 and a low of 47.

West Virginia: Today - Sunny, high in mid 60s to low 70s, lows in the 40s. Sunday - Sunny, high around 70 to mid 70s.

The Nation Yesterday: Cloudy skies and showers were spreading the nation. The showers were scattered from southern California and Arizona into Utah and Wyoming. A cloud front through western Washington pushed showers across the Pacific Northwest. East of the Rockies there was hardly a cloud in the sky. The warm October sun lifted the mercury into the 70s over most of the nation and in the 80s across the southern Plains and most of the South. The showers left New England but skies were partly cloudy. With only a little sunshine the temperatures were only in the 50s.

The National Weather Forecast for today - Showers will spread across the western third of the nation, mostly from Arizona through the Rockies to the Pacific Northwest. The remainder of the country will be mostly sunny. The rain will keep the temperatures in the 80s through the desert Southwest. The Pacific Northwest, Montana, and northern Maine will remain cool. The remainder of the nation will have mild conditions.

The Council of Government's Air Quality Index for yesterday showed the high reading in the Washington area during the 2 to 3 p.m. period was 13 for the pollutant, photochemical oxidants. Index values between 0 and 24 indicate good air quality. When the index exceeds 100 the air is considered very unhealthy and individual with lung, heart and eye ailments are urged to restrict their activity. The forecast for today indicates that the air quality will remain good.
